The rearview mirror— Notes from the French countryside

In a far away time I lived here.
But all I could see was my mind
Racing down country roads
As fast as I could turn.
I was the asshole
Riding your rear end
To a future I’d never arrive at,
Always seeking hardly finding

The sky was forever gray,
Hills repeated and monotonous.
One more event,
One more thing to hurry to.
A haze of too much
Everything filled with everything
Except the right here and right now.

I never actually looked around.
I never stopped to actually see.
The birds would wake me,
But I didn’t wake for them.
I didn’t rise to meet the sunrise
Or catch the morning glory of church in the sky.
I didn’t see the sky reflected in the ponds
Dotted all around the countryside.
All I could see was a winding road
That I knew by heart

Without my heart

I never took in the feeling of the air on my skin,
Never saw the leaves dancing in the light,
Never let my eyes trace the curves of the hills.

It’s funny how all of life shifted.

The moment all of me showed up this time.

Colors pop.
Details emerge.
Sounds play like music,
And beauty stops me, again and again.

Hello. Here I am.

Here you are.

Since when did the oak trees become so regal?
The fields of grass so sumptuous?
When did the birds learn choreographies
floating in a current of air

My eyes are softening.
My heart is full of water, at times it spills over
Why didn’t anyone tell me
Life was this beautiful?

Maybe they did
But nothing here changed.
I did.
